Emmanuel Levinas, filósofo, herdeiro da cultura judaica, já tinha proximidade aos livros desde novo, devido a influência de seu pai, um livreiro. O mesmo é responsável por obras como Totalidade e Infinito, utilizada no presente artigo com o objetivo de analisar o pensamento do filósofo acerca da responsabilidade ética com outrem. O rosto é a parte essencial do estudo quando se fala sobre a responsabilidade, pois é a parte do nosso corpo em que se encontram as feições que são responsáveis pela comunicação face-a-face, que transmite sentimentos mesmo que involuntariamente. É através desse encontro face-a-face que entra a responsabilidade com o Outrem, essa que, para Levinas, se trata de uma responsabilidade ética. A responsabilidade é uma obrigação, queira ou não. E é a partir desse momento que se compreende que a responsabilidade “retira” a liberdade, pois as próprias atitudes afetam todos ao redor, e não apenas a si. Com isso, Levinas continua seu estudo acerca da responsabilidade ética, que é insubstituível e imutável para com o eu e com o outrem.
