Este artigo buscou investigar como as relações entre a cidade e o campo estão figuradas no romance O resto é silêncio, de Erico Verissimo. O enredo se passa na capital do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, no inÃcio dos anos 40, e é rico de referências ao perÃodo de intensificação do processo de urbanização pelo qual o paÃs estava passando desde a década anterior, o que possibilitou a realização de uma pesquisa com tal temática. Para isso, o foco do trabalho se deteve sobre o narrador e alguns personagens julgados de mais relevo, ou por guardarem ainda a memória de um passado na zona rural, ou por representarem estereótipos urbanos.
This paper attempts to investigate how Erico Verissimo’s novel O resto é silêncio represents the relations between the city and the countryside. The plot takes place in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, in the early 40s, and it is rich in references to the period of the 30s and the 40s when the country passed through an intensified urbanization process, which enables a research on this matter. In order to do so, this paper’s scope restricts itself to the narrator and to some characters judged more relevant either for keeping the remembrance of a past in the countryside or for representing urban stereotypes.
