O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar a importância de Jacob e Wilhelm Grimm para as ciências humanas e a sua progressiva transformação em “heróis culturais”. Primeiramente os autores situam a obra dos irmãos Grimm no contexto histórico, literário e científico do século XIX. Num segundo momento, discutem a marginalização da folclorística no Brasil e a sua redescoberta pelos historiadores nos últimos anos. Finalmente, é utilizado o instrumental teórico da folclorística a fim de analisar o filme The Brothers Grimm, de Terry Gilliam.
We aim in this article to evaluate Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's importance for the humanities and their progressive transformation in “cultural heroes”. Firstly, the authors try to understand Grimm's work in the historical, literary and scientific context of the 19th. century. Secondly, they discuss the marginalization of the folkloristics in Brazil and how it was rediscovered by historians in the last years. Finally, the theoretical arsenal of folkloristics is used in order to analyze the film The Brothers Grimm, from Terry Gilliam.
