O presente trabalho pretende discutir questões relacionadas ao patrimônio documental sobre escravidão em Petrópolis, bem como problematizar por quais motivos há poucos estudos sobre o elemento servil em um local tão estratégico para o Império brasileiro como a “cidade de Pedro”. Nesse sentido, iniciaremos o debate colocando em questão a ideia de Cidade Imperial e de que maneira essa proposta contribuiu para o apagamento da memória negra em Petrópolis. A partir disso, norteados pelo conceito de “paradigma indiciário”, discutiremos o patrimônio documental enquanto fonte para pesquisa, focando nossa análise em duas instituições, o Arquivo da Cúria Diocesana de Petrópolis e o Museu Imperial. Vamos aqui explorar as especificidades e potencialidades das tipologias documentais na pesquisa histórica, em especial os registros eclesiásticos (livros de batismo, casamento e óbito) da freguesia de São Pedro de Alcântara e a ata da solenidade de libertação dos últimos escravizados de Petrópolis.

This paper aims to discuss issues related to documentary heritage on slavery in Petropolis, as well as to discuss why there are few studies on the servile element in a place as strategic for the Brazilian Empire as the "city of Pedro". In this sense, we will start the debate by questioning the idea of the Imperial City and how this proposal contributed to the erasure of black memory in Petropolis. Based on this, guided by the concept of “indiciary paradigm”, we will discuss the documentary heritage as a source for research, focusing our analysis on two institutions, the Archives of the Diocesan Curia of Petropolis and the Imperial Museum. We will here explore the specificities and potentialities of documentary typologies in historical research, especially the ecclesiastical records (baptism, marriage and death books) of the parish of São Pedro de Alcântara and the minutes of the solemnity of liberation of the last enslaved people in Petropolis.
