Demócrito bebeu nas mais variadas fontes de conhecimento da tradição grega antiga e herdou um conjunto de teses científicas e filosóficas fundamentais, e, a partir delas, o filósofo de Abdera elaborou sua teoria da percepção sensível. O presente trabalho se debruça sobre um aspecto específico da teoria da percepção democrítea mais ampla, qual seja, ο da sensação auditiva (? κο?ειν), isto é, o resultado da relação entre o órgão da audição e o fluxo sonoro, ou seja, o som. Para Teofrasto, principal fonte das teorias da percepção dos filósofos denominados pré-socráticos, o som é formado pelo contato entre o órgão de percepção e o ente percebido e encontra no ar o instrumento necessário para o conhecimento sensível.

Democritus drank from the most varied sources of knowledge in the ancient Greek tradition and inherited a set of fundamental scientific and philosophical theses, and from them Abdera's philosopher elaborated his theory of sensitive perception. The present work focuses on a specific aspect of the broader democritean perception theory, namely, ο of auditory sensation (?κο ?ειν), that is, the result of the relationship between the organ of hearing and the sound flow, that is, sound. For Teofrasto, the main source of the theories of perception of the so-called pre-Socratic philosophers, sound is formed by the contact between the organ of perception and the perceived entity and finds in the air the necessary instrument for sensitive knowledge.
