In early twentieth century, firewood remained as the main energy source for homes in small Brazilian towns. This paper shows that woodcutters and firewood dealers acted freely in Minas Gerais, since governmental forest policy was only concerned with timber industry and great consumers of wood. It also estimates consume of firewood in Pedro Leopoldo municipality and its relative impact on deforestation. The sources used are official documents and the testimony of ancient dwellers.
