The teaching and learning of genetics is challenging in biology for both student and teacher. In this sense, theuse of concept maps as a didactic strategy can help to minimize this gap. The present work aimed to evaluate the knowledge of third year high school students about genetics content and the use of concept maps in learning. The information was accessed through the application of a semi-structured form to 72 high school students in three state schools located in the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte. Among the genetics concepts most cited by respondents in this research are DNA (9.35%) and RNA (8.40%), which may be an indication that these subjects are seen more often in the classroom by students. It was also observed that the students showed difficulties in interconnecting some terms of genetics, making it evident that most associations were made moreby the similarity of terms than by the firmness of knowledge. Regarding the concept maps, many students reported having an interest in putting this didactic alternative into practice to assist in learning genetics.
