Este artigo parte da constatação da existência de uma ampla tradição de debates republicanos. Nesta tradição, podemos destacar Philip Pettit, considerado a figura central da retomada das discussões acerca do republicanismo. Pettit é oriundo da tradição romana do republicanismo e concebe uma terceira possibilidade à tradicional distinção existente entre liberdade positiva e liberdade negativa. Ele admit
e a liberdade como não-dominação, como ausência de toda e qualquer interferência que possa ser arbitrária. Nesta perspectiva, só é cidadão republicano quem não sofre arbitrariedades por parte de outro. Estes aspectos caracterizam o neorrepublicanismo do autor.
This article starts from a notice of the existence of a wide tradition of republican debate. In this tradition we can highlight Philip Pettit, regarded as the leading figure of the debate revival concerning republicanism. Pettit comes from Roman tradition of republicanism and conceives a third possibility of freedom, which is an alternative to the traditional distinction between positive freedom and negative freedom. He stresses freedom as non-domination, as the absence of all kind of arbitrary interference. In this view, a republican citizen is just the person who does not suffer arbitrary interference from another. These aspects characterize the author’s neorepublicanism.
