This article is intended to be a study about the book Gothic War, by Procopius of Caesarea (490 – 562).
It’s about narratives referring to the period of wars promoted by the Byzantine emperor Justinian seeking
the reincorporation of the Italian Peninsula into the Roman territory during the 6th century. In the writings
of Procopius, assessor for Belisarius, Justinian’s chief military commander, the uniqueness of the
characterization given by the historian to the Franks, called barbarians, even being Christians, comes to
our attention. Here we try to show ways to comprehend how this vision of the Franks was built by
Procopius, considering this supposed contradiction between the concepts used by the historian, regarding
it was a Roman empire officially Christian in the 6th century.
