Este trabalho identifica a produção científica em vigilância sanitária no período de 1999 a 2009, utilizando a base BVS da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde no que diz respeito à pós-graduação stricto senso e o Sistema Qualis da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento do Ensino Superior – Capes referindo-se aos artigos científicos indexados como vigilância sanitária e ao banco de dados da base Capes. Os resultados encontrados foram dispostos à luz do Plano Estratégico de Pesquisa em Vigilância Sanitária – PEP VISA –, instrumento desenvolvido pela Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária – Anvisa em 2007 para subsidiar a pesquisa em vigilância sanitária. Buscou-se, ainda, situar a estratificação no Sistema Qualis dos periódicos nos quais os artigos em vigilância sanitária eram publicados em índices percentuais, comparando-os com o total das revistas da grande área de concentração em Saúde Coletiva. O material encontrado demonstra maior concentração dos artigos em periódicos B3. Associa-se a essa situação um crescimento e diversificação temática na área, bem como a preocupação com a pesquisa e o desenvolvimento da área como produtora de conhecimento. Entretanto, essa produção, se comparada ao desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico do País, é ainda inexpressiva, necessitando de debate e definição de uma política em todo o Sistema Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária.

This article identifies the scientific production in health surveillance in the period 1999 to 2009, using the basis of the BVS Virtual Health Library concerning to graduate in the strict sense and the Qualis System of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education – Capes referring to scientific articles indexed as surveillance and the database from the base Capes. The results were arranged in the light of the Strategic Plan for Research in Health Surveillance – VISA PEP – an instrument developed by Anvisa in 2007 to subsidize research in health surveillance. Was sought to also place the stratification system in which articles were published in health surveillance in percentage rates and compared them with the scientific journals of the total area of concentration in Public Health. The material found shows a greater concentration of articles in journals B3. Associated with this position, a growth and diversification in the thematic area, as well as the concern with research and development of the area as a producer of knowledge. However, this production compared to the scientific and technological development of the country is still unimpressive, requiring discussion and definition of policy across the National Health Surveillance System.
