Este artigo analisa a variação na produção de vogais frontais altas do Inglês que
possuem o traço [- tenso] por falantes de Português Brasileiro durante a aquisição de L2.
Percebemos que alguns sujeitos produzem formas como l[I]v e outros que não conseguem
produzir tal fonema, entretanto, o mesmo sujeito pode produzir a vogal desejada em um
vocábulo e não fazê-lo em outro. Com base na Teoria de Traços Distintivos (CHOMSKY e
HALLE, 1968) explicaremos o comportamento fonológico dessa vogal alta e como se dá a
variação em sua produção. Explicaremos também porque a vogal frontal alta do Inglês com o
traço [+ tenso] é alcançada mais facilmente.
This article analyzes the variation in production of English high front vowels that
have the feature [- tense] by native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese while they are learning
English as a foreign language. It was possible to perceive that some subjects produce words
like l[I]v and others can’t pronounce such phoneme, however, the same subject can pronounce
the aimed vowel once and fail to do that in another. Based on the Theory of the Distinctive
Features (CHOMSKY and HALLE, 1968) we will explain the phonological behavior of this
high vowel and how the variation in its production occurs. We will also explain why the
English high front vowel with the feature [+ tense] is achieved more easily.
