Este artigo trata do papel da Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Carmo, situada no centro de Boa Vista-RR, enquanto espaço de pertencimento e identidade religiosa. Ele parte do pressuposto de que a igreja é um lugar que, dotado de ligação afetiva com os habitantes da cidade, se transforma num monumento das características que a cidade quer manter de si mesma. O artigo traz, em primeiro lugar, uma discussão teórica das relações umbilicais sobre memória e identidade para, em seguida, tratar da restauração da igreja pelos poderes públicos e do engajamento da comunidade religiosa na busca por suas tradições fundantes. O estudo foi realizado utilizando fotografias que dão conta do processo de restauração da igreja, reportagens da imprensa local e entrevistas com o padre Raimundo Vanthuy Neto e o administrador Frank Lima, ligados ao processo de reforma e manutenção da igreja.
This articlestudies the role of the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Carmo, located in the center of Boa Vista-RR, as a space of belonging and religious identity. It starts from the assumption that the church is a place that, endowed with an affective connection with the inhabitants of the city, becomes a monument of the characteristics that the city wants to keep of itself. The article first brings a theoretical discussion about umbilical relationshipson identity and memory and then deals with the restoration of the church by public authorities and the engagement of the religious community in the search for its founding traditions. The study was carried out using photographs that tell the process of restoration of the local church, local pressreportsand interviews with Father Raimundo Vanthuy Neto and administrator Frank Lima, linked to the process of reform and maintenance of the Church.
