O artigo procura analisar a organização polÃtica e social dos Ãndios da
provÃncia do EspÃrito Santo e o processo de recrutamento deles para trabalharem
para o Estado, durante a primeira metade do século XIX. São dois os principais
objetivos da reflexão: (1) analisar o sistema polÃtico-administrativo que controlava
o trabalho dos Ãndios, identificando os lugares e tipos de serviços realizados por
eles, as principais autoridade civis e militares responsáveis pelas questões indÃgenas
e os temas e questões mais recorrentes levantados pelos próprios Ãndios que estavam
submetidos ao “serviço imperial e nacionalâ€; e (2) verificar o impacto desse sistema
polÃtico-administrativo criado para captar o trabalho indÃgena na reprodução das
fronteiras étnicas entre os Ãndios e os “outros†moradores da provÃncia.
The paper intends to analyze Indian’s political and social organization
within the province of EspÃrito Santo and the process of recruiting Indian labor
force to work for the State during the first half of the XIXth century. Our reflection
has two major objectives: 1) analyze the political-administrative system that controlled
Indian labor, identifying the places and kinds of jobs performed by them,
the main civil and military authorities responsible for Indian issues, and the themes
and issues that were currently debated by the Indians, who were being recruited to
the imperial and national service; 2) consider the impact this political-administrative
system created to recruit Indian labor had in the reproduction of ethnic boundaries
between Indian and “other†inhabitants within the province.
