A solução que será analisada é de um sistema de cogeração de uma usina de dessalinização de água do mar com um reator de fusão, onde se busca estabelecer o lay-out da instalação, os sistemas de interface entre as duas usinas, os parâmetros de sincronismo, e o controle dos riscos de falha. Os volumes de água doce e salgada no planeta Terra são respectivamente de 2,5% para 97,5%. Para o volume de água doce, apenas 1% se encontra disponível na superfície, o restante está no subsolo ou nas calotas polares. Os sinais de falta de energia e de falta de água potável já começam a aparecer. Atualmente 20% da população mundial não tem acesso à água potável. O aumento demográfico somado ao aumento da demanda per capita trará uma tendência de crescimento cada vez maior destas duas crises. A previsão para as próximas décadas é de duplicação das demandas, e fica cada vez mais óbvio que a solução não poderá ser apenas dobrar o atual modelo de produção. Novas técnicas deverão ser criadas para que surjam novos padrões de atendimento destas demandas.
