O presente manuscrito apresenta uma avaliação técnica de Language in society (editora Routledge, 2025), obra introdutória da sociolinguística contemporânea que coloca em articulação as áreas de variação linguística, multilinguismo, línguas de contato e direitos linguísticos. Discutem-se os fundamentos metodológicos, com destaque para a reflexão sobre a relevância dos métodos quantitativos. Analisam-se implicações políticas do conhecimento linguístico, incluindo planejamento educacional, justiça comunicativa e preservação de línguas ameaçadas. Aponta-se que a autora, Nala H. Lee, denuncia os limites de modelos hegemônicos, incorpora dados do hemisfério sul e considera impactos de tecnologias digitais na produção e circulação de dados sociolinguísticos atuais.
This text presents a review of Language in society (Routledge, 2025), an introductory work on contemporary sociolinguistics, articulating the fields of linguistic variation, multilingualism, contact languages, and linguistic rights. Methodological foundations are discussed, with an emphasis on the relevance of quantitative methods. The political implications of linguistic knowledge are analyzed, including educational planning, communicative justice, and the preservation of endangered languages. It is highlighted that the author, Nala H. Lee, critiques the limits of hegemonic models, incorporates data from the Southern Hemisphere, and considers the impacts of digital technologies on the production and circulation of current sociolinguistic data.
