Este artigo trata do processo de sucessão na presidência da Assembleia de Deus
em Belém do Pará, ocorrida em 1997, quando um lÃder veterano trouxe “de foraâ€
um lÃder da nova geração para substituÃ-lo na direção da “igreja-mãe†do movimento
assembleiano no Brasil. É apresentado o contexto dessa mudança e como
este pode ser configurado como uma situação retórica. Descreve-se a solenidade
de posse do novo presidente e os atos retóricos correspondentes, como tentativas
de solução do problema de legitimação criado pela escolha de um sucessor, em circunstâncias
que fugiam às regras da tradição daquela igreja. Conclui-se com uma
análise dos discursos e uma breve avaliação dos efeitos desses atos retóricos.
This paper presents the process of presidential succession of the Assembly of
God Church in Belém – Brazil, in 1997, when the veteran president has nominated
a new generation minister to succeed him in leadership of main-church.
Furthermore, this paper presents the context of this succession and how it may
be configured as a “rhetorical situationâ€. It also describes the ceremony of investiture
of the new president of the Assembly of God Church and the corresponding
“rhetorical acts†to solve the problem of legitimacy created by the choice of a
successor when the rules of the church-tradition were broken. It concludes with
an analysis of speeches and an assessment of the effects of these “rhetorical actsâ€.
