O artigo examina um excerto escrito pelo bispo dominicano Étienne de Bourbon que narra a
adoração do Cão de Guinefort. Para a interpretação do que é descrito pelo clérigo são expostas noções das
diferentes concepções do que era superstição, utilizando principalmente Santo Agostinho e São Tomás de
Aquino. A procedência do culto e das superstições é discutida, assim como os nÃveis de cultura
envolvidos, com a identificação de um nÃvel comum e intermediário e das relações constituÃdas. Também
é estabelecida uma relação entre as superstições e o pecado, e algumas das consequências da
obrigatoriedade das confissões. Com estas análises, este trabalho retrata certas caracterÃsticas da
religiosidade e da religião no século XIII.
The article examines an excerpt written by the Dominican bishop Étienne de Bourbon, that
tells the worship of the Dog from Guinefort. For the interpretation of what the priest described, slight
knowledge of the different conceptions of what were the concept of superstition, using mainly Saint
Augustin and Saint Thomas Aquinas. The origin of the cult and the superstitions is argued, as well as the
involved levels of culture, with the identification of a common and intermediate cultural level and of the
established relations. Also it is established a relation between the superstitions and the sin, and some of
the consequences of the obligatoriness of the confessions. With these analyses, the article portrays certain
characteristics of the religiosity and the religion in XIII century.
