The central peripheral insertion catheter has significant importance in the treatment of drugs such as antibiotics, chemotherapies, hypertonic solutions, parenteral nutrition and prolonged intravenous treatment. The objective of this study was to verify the time of permanence of the PICC catheter of neonates retained in the ICU of a school hospital in the north of Minas Gerais, relating the results to the variables of the birth profile involving the clinical picture and indications for the use of PICC. Descriptive study and quantitative analysis. Data collection was done through an instrument developed by the researchers through the review of charts of the neonatal intensive care sector at a school hospital in the North of Minas Gerais. The sample consisted of 10 records of neonates retained in the neonatal intensive care unit during the analyzed period. Eight newborns used the central peripheral insertion catheter, the others used umbilical venous catheter and peripheral catheter. This intravenous device is effective in neonatal intensive care, favoring the improvement of the quality of assistance to newborns and avoiding the various punctures that would be performed if they used a peripheral venous access, a parenteral drug and nutritional contribution.
