In this paper the book Vidas Secas is used as support to the understanding of Human Rights over the life, culture and socio-environmental matters in the Northeast region of Brazil, the Sertão, which endures to this day. It intends to reveal the reality of the Sertanejo life and emphasize the time in which it happens, thus demonstrating the timelessness of the story. The matter consists in questioning the possibility of a modern social and legal hermeneutics through the work of Graciliano Ramos, written in 1938. The study carries the ideals of ‘solidarity’ from Zygmunt Baumann and ‘otherness’ from Enrique Leff as fundamental frameworks. Besides, the idea of ‘alterity’ from Emmanuel Levinas’ work was utilized as a subsidiary theoretical framework. Through doctrinal research, in an analytically-descriptive manner, it concludes on the timeliness of the text and the emergency of an necessary formation of a pattern of alterity in relation to the Sertanejo region, and other equally forgotten regions. They are spaces that need a collective re-signification capable of transforming its inhabitants into true social actors capable of influencing the environment in which they inhabit.
