Uma estrofe intrigante

O texto teve origem numa pergunta nada fácil do Professor Doutor
Helder Macedo: – “Como interpreta a estrofe V, 77 de Os Lusíadas”? –, à qual
tentei responder buscando, originalmente, o apoio de fontes portuguesas e
em seguida de fontes chinesas, nas quais encontrei novas informações, mais
satisfatórias, sobre ela. Depois de muita e acurada leitura, cheguei a várias
conclusões, destacando-se a de que os portugueses se atribuíam a missão de
“dilatar a Fé, o Império”, enquanto que os chineses nunca se tinham preocupado
em implantar o seu pensamento filosófico-religioso, caracterizando-se pelo
respeito e tolerância para com todas as religiões dos países visitados.

The text stems from a not very easy question put by Prof. Helder
Macedo: – “ How do you interpret the strophe V,77 from The Lusiads?” – a
question I have tried originally to answer based on Portuguese sources and then
on Chinese ones. From the latter I have found new, more adequate information
about the above strophe. After an extensive and accurate reading, I have
reached several conclusions, specially the fact that the Portuguese took upon
themselves the mission to “enlarge the Faith, the Empire”, while the Chinese
had never taken on the spread of their philosophical-religious thought. In fact,
they are known for respecting and tolerating all religions from the countries
they have visited.
