O presente texto é um recorte de uma pesquisa de doutorado cuja intenção é compreender a organização dos círculos de cultura no Rio Grande do Sul. Eles fizeram parte do movimento de educação popular fundamentado e proposto por Paulo Freire, realizado no Brasil no início dos anos 1960. Para abordar o tema, foram mobilizados jornais da época, investigados sob a perspectiva da análise documental histórica. O movimento (que alfabetizava visando conscientização e, por isso, se diferenciava das práticas que eram realizadas nas escolas, quando foi inicialmente pensado) ocorreu no Rio Grande do Sul após experiências positivas no nordeste. Em virtude disso, este texto busca citar alguns aspectos considerados principais do pensamento freireano que fundamentam os círculos de cultura e os definem como um movimento de educação popular, apresentando indícios que confirmam sua realização no Rio Grande do Sul.
The present text is a cutofa doctoral research whoseintention is to understand the organization of culturecircles inthe StateofRio Grande do Sul, Brazil. These were part of the popular education movement founded and proposed by Paulo Freire in Brazil atthe beginning of the1960‟s. In order to approachthe theme, newspapers of thattime were mobilized, investigated from the perspective of historical documentary analysis. The movement (which alphabetizedaiming at awareness and, therefore, was different from the practices that were carried out in schools, when it was initially thought) took place in theState ofRio Grande do Sulafter positive experiences in Braziliannortheast. Because of that, this text seeks to mentionsome of the main aspects of the Freirean thought that groundcultural circles and define them as a popular education movement, presentingpieces of evidence that confirm its realization in Rio Grande do Sul.
