At the time of the arrival of the government of Frente Amplio in 2005, there were two events of particular relevance to the country's political life.First, for the first time in history a coalition of leftist groups took the reins of executive power. Second, the government had a majority in both houses of parliament, allowing it to arrange a political agenda without a commitment with the opposition. Subsequent elections in 2009 marked the continuation of this political scenario. In this context, the aim of this paper is to analyse the foreign policy developed by the two frenteamplistas governments, led by Tabare Vazquez and Jose Mujica respectively. To do this, we use the information processed by the Uruguayan Foreign Policy Observatory for both periods. Particular attention is devoted to the elements of change / continuity in relation to previous governments and between the periods frenteamplistas. The work is concluded by projecting what we expect from a third government headed once again by Vazquez. On this point, it is expected that the tension between privileging the relations with the South or the relations maintained with the Northern superpower will continue.

Tras la llegada al gobierno por parte del Frente Amplio en el año 2005 se produjeron dos hechos de particular relevancia para la vida política del país. En primer lugar, por primera vez en la historia una coalición de grupos de izquierdas tomaba las riendas del poder ejecutivo. En segundo lugar, este gobierno contaba con mayoría propia en ambas cámaras del Parlamento, lo que le permitió tramitar su agenda política sin necesidad de pactar con la oposición. Las elecciones posteriores, en 2009, marcaron la continuidad de este escenario político. En este marco, el objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la política exterior desarrollada por los dos gobiernos frenteamplistas, encabezados por Tabaré Vázquez y José Mujica respectivamente. Para ello, se cuenta con la información procesada por el Observatorio Uruguayo de Política Exterior para ambos períodos. Durante el trabajo se presta particular atención a los elementos de cambio/continuidad en relación con los gobiernos anteriores y entre los propios períodos frenteamplistas, y se concluye proyectando qué podemos esperar de un tercer gobierno encabezado por Vázquez nuevamente. Sobre el punto, se proyecta que la tensión entre privilegiar las relaciones con los vecinos del Sur o con la potencia del Norte se mantendrá durante el próximo mandato.
