A parenética do jesuíta Antônio Vieira pressupõe a indissociável relação entre fatores sociais e estéticos. Ao mesmo tempo em que predica na colônia sobre procedimentos, ideias e fatos que aconteciam, evidenciando-se em sua produção um atendimento ao que demandavam Portugal e a Igreja, porta-se como um fantástico artista da palavra. Sua oratória, aos moldes da justa forma horaciana do dulci e utile, pautou-se pela superlação metafórica e pela analogia entre a ideia que defende e a citação do Evangelho, tematizando, por meio de figuras, assuntos variados. Versou sobre temas como o ato de pregar, passando pelo sofrimento dos oprimidos até a guerra por território. Mas, além do político e religioso, este estudo aborda aspectos expressivos da sua parenética que, apesar de não ter colhido proporcionalmente os frutos da sua força de expressão, fez perpetuar, na mesma intensidade da sua ação e da sua palavra, as construções metafóricas e hiperbólicas fortalecidas pela essência da mensagem que deixou em prol de um homem mais humano.

The sermon of Father Antônio Vieira presupposes the inseparable relation between social and aesthetic factors. At the same time as he preaches in the colony about procedures, ideas and events that took place, evidencing in his production a service to what Portugal and the Church demanded, he behaved like a fantastic artist of the word. His oratory, in the molds of the just Horacian form of dulci and utile, was based on the metaphorical superlation and the analogy between the idea he defended and the quotation from the Gospel, thematizing, through figures, various subjects. He dealt with subjects such as the act of preaching, the suffering of the oppressed, and the war for territory. But in addition to the political and religious, this study deals with expressive aspects of its preaching that, although it did not take proportionally the fruits of its force of expression, did perpetuate in the same intensity of its action and of its word, the metaphorical and hyperbolic constructions strengthened by the essence of the message he left for a more humane man.
