O presente artigo reflete sobre as práticas mágicas presentes no imaginário colonial. A crença em poderes sobrenaturais não foi uma característica colonial, apesar dos índios e africanos terem reconstruído e resignificado muitas delas. Foram consideradas mágicas as práticas que implicavam no poder de adivinhar, curar, inclinar vontades, embruxar crianças e obter proteção. Elas foram analisadas buscando a identificação social do praticante e de seus adeptos, assim como os significados dessas crenças e seus rituais em sua relação com o contexto em que eram praticadas. A análise se orienta a partir de pressupostos caros à história cultural, utilizando noções de imaginário e representações sociais. Busca identificar distinções sociais que interferiam nos juízos a respeito de mágicos e usuários de magias.
This article reflects on. The belief in supernatural powers was not a feature of colonial rule, although the Indians and Africans had resignifying and rebuilt many of them. The practices involving the power of divination, healing, bewitching and voodoo were considered magical. Hese practices were analyzed according to the social identification of the practitioner and their supporters, as well as the meanings of these beliefs and rituals and their relation to the context in which they were performed. The analysis is guided from the assumptions that it was harmful to the cultural history, using notions of imaginary and social representations. It seeks to identify social distinctions that interfered with judgments of the sorcerers and the followers of sorcery.
