O presente trabalho encaminha o levantamento e a discussão de algumas das questões culturais e sociais cruciais que permearam as experiências dos indivíduos nas metrópoles europeias do final do século XIX e início do século XX, enfatizando o caso parisiense. Ele parte do questionamento intenso na época com relação aos princípios modernizadores e ao ideal de homem moderno emancipado e esclarecido, buscando localizar esta crise de identidade como uma espécie de sintoma desta conjuntura. Leva em consideração, no entanto, aspectos tradicionais remanescentes do Antigo Regime, e que faziam destas cidades espaços de encontro entre forças, em princípio, antagônicas. Utilizarei aqui também alguns trechos do romance de Marcel Proust (1871-1922) intitulado À la recherche du temps perdu, publicado entre 1913 e 1927, para problematizar algumas formas pelas quais estes problemas foram levantados e discutidos pela literatura da época.
This work forwards the survey and discussion of some of the cultural and social issues that permeated the crucial experiences of individuals in European cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, emphasizing the Parisian case. It begins by the intense questioning about the modernizers principles and ideals of emancipation of modern man, seeking to locate this identity crisis as a symptom of this context. It takes into account, however, the traditional aspects of the ancien regime, which made these cities become places of encounter between forces in principle antagonistic. I will use here some excerpts from the novel by Marcel Proust (1871-1922) titled À la recherche du temps perdu, published between 1913 and 1927, to discuss some ways in which these issues were raised and discussed in the literature of the time.
