O presente artigo objetiva apresentar um quadro sobre os estudos da linguagem e da História do Centro-Oeste, realizados em suas instituições de pesquisa ou em instituições situadas em outras regiões, nos últimos setenta anos, e como estes estudos refletem uma interpretação sobre a região. Deste quadro, recuou-se para séculos anteriores com o fim de demonstrar como, especialmente o XVIII, carece de investigações gerais. Por fim, são feitas sugestões para que sejam elaboradas perguntas basilares a que se construam uma descrição e interpretações do Centro-Oeste, nos estudos de História e da Linguagem, numa perspectiva interdisciplinar, concebendo que as línguas e as feições históricas desta região não devem ser pensadas separadamente, posto que a língua sirva aos fatos históricos, interpretando-os e registrando-os e a História deixa rastros indeléveis nas gramáticas, nos vocabulários e nos discursos que alicerçam uma língua. Os desafios do Centro-Oeste para compreender esta relação porque as línguas que o entretecem são várias e a sua História assentase ainda em mitos a serem repensados também são discutidos. Obras de historiadores, linguistas e filólogos que têm se dedicado às línguas e à história do Centro-Oeste servem de base teórica para as perguntas fundamentais e, sobretudo, apontam possíveis respostas.

This article aims present a illustration about the studies of language and History of the Midwest, elaborate in their institutions for research or institutions located in other regions, in the last seventy years, and how these studies show an interpretation about the region. From this illustration, turned to earlier centuries in order to demonstrate how, especially 18th century, need general investigations. Finally, suggestions are made for develop basic questions that can build a description and an interpretation of the Midwest, in studies about the History and about the language, from an interdisciplinary perspective, in which languages and historical characteristics of this region should not be designed separately, because the language serves the historical facts, interpreting them and writing them, at the same time the History leaves indelible traces in grammars, in vocabularies and discourses that construct a language. The challenges of the Midwest to understand this relationship because their languages are different, and their history is marked by myths that need be rethought are also discussed. Studies by historians, linguists and philologists who have been devoted to languages and History of the Midwest are the theoretical base for the fundamental questions and, mainly, show possible answers.
