O presente estudo tem por objetivo analisar o processo de afirmação histórica de Timor-Leste como Estado soberano, propondo uma reflexão à luz do princípio internacional da autodeterminação dos povos. Percorrendo o sinuoso caminho de independência de Timor-Leste, será possível analisar o papel desempenhado pela ONU nesse triste episódio da história humana, no que se refere à proteção dos direitos humanos. Além disso, a investigação permite desvendar a luta cotidiana do povo timorense para a construção da cidadania e o auxilio que o Brasil vem prestando no pós-independência. A pesquisa realizada, conjugando os métodos indutivo, dialético e sócio-histórico, permite concluir que a autodeterminação dos povos é essencial para a emancipação humana, e que a solidariedade internacional foi fundamental para reprimir a barbárie e possibilitar o florescimento de uma cidadania timorense livre.

This study aims to analyze the historical process of affirmation of the East Timor as a sovereign state, proposing a reflection of the international principle of self-determination of peoples. Traversing sinuous path of East Timor independence, will be possible analyze the role played by the UN in this sad episode of human history, as regards the protection of human rights. In addition, the research allows unveil the daily struggle of the timorense people for the construction of citizenship and the aid that Brazil has provided in the post independence. The research, combining the inductive, dialectical and historical social methods, shows that the self-determination of peoples is essential for human emancipation, and that international solidarity was crucial to eliminate barbarity and allow the flowering of a free timorense citizenship.
