Propósito nosso, com este trabalho, é analisar o meio ambiente como um dos elementos
fundamentais da ocupação colonial de Mato Grosso. Entendemos que o conceito de
natureza deva ser pensado ao mesmo tempo em que se processam as relações sociais de
determinada população. A idéia de que o homem poderá conquistar e dominar a
natureza, bem como desvendar-lhe os mistérios, tornando-se dela possuidor, abrigou
uma ação civilizatória, mediatizada por conceitos, normas e valores, historicamente
determinados pela concepção européia do século XVIII. No nosso contexto, encorajou
os administradores da Capitania de Mato Grosso a levar a termo as palavras do Gênese:-
“enchei a terra e submetei-aâ€.
This article examines the environment as one of the principal components of the
colonial occupation in Mato Grosso. We understand that the concept of nature should be
considered in the context of the social relationships of a given society. The idea that the
human being can conquest nature as well as reveal its mysteries becoming its owner
lodged a civilizing action mediated by concepts, norms, and values historically
determined by the European conception of the 18th Century. In the context of Mato
Grosso, it encouraged the administrators of the captaincy of Mato Grosso to carry
forward the words of Genesis: “fill earth and subdue itâ€.
