Este artigo trata das reações dos historiadores norte-americanos à presumida fragmentação
de sua disciplina durante as décadas de 1980 e 1990, supostamente causada pela emergência
da Nova História Social e dos chamados “estudos particularistasâ€. O texto atenta principalmente
para algumas das diversas tentativas de se escapar de tal situação e dos diversos chamamentos
a sÃnteses capazes de dar conta da ampla especialização disciplinar daquele perÃodo. Da mesma
maneira, este trabalho busca analisar algumas as repercussões polÃticas desta fragmentação,
já que alguns historiadores viram nela a dissolução de uma história nacional única, botando em
risco, assim, para a própria identidade nacional dos Estados Unidos.
This article deals with the reactions of some American historians to the presumed disciplinary
fragmentation of the 1980s and 1990s, allegedly cause by the emergence of the New Social
History and of the so-called “particularist studiesâ€. The text pays attention to some of the various
attempts of escape from such a situation and to the many calls to syntheses capable of dealing
with the wide disciplinary specialization of that time. Similarly, this works aims to analyze some
of the political repercussions of this fragmentation, since some historians saw in it the dissolution
of a single national history, thus jeopardizing the very national identity of the United States.
