O presente estudo pretende analisar o papel dos filhos na família romana e a sua relação com a patria potestas. Mediante o método de abordagem dedutivo e as técnicas de pesquisa bibliográfica, iniciou-se discorrendo sobre as características da família romana, precipuamente da família proprio iure, para prosseguir com uma análise do pater familias e dos atributos da patria potestas. Nesse contexto, delineou-se a figura dos filhos no direito romano, com especial resguardo à sua coisificação no seio familiar. Após, foram examinadas as suas transformações na Roma Antiga, para verificar se a coisificação, existente no direito arcaico, foi superada com as últimas alterações da família romana.

This study aims to analyze the role of children in the Roman family and their relationship with patria potestas. Thus, it began discoursing about the Roman family characteristics, mainly the familia proprio iure, to proceed with an analysis of the patria potestas and the attributes of the pater familias. In this context, the figure of children in Roman law was outlined, with special regard to its objectification in the family. After, the changes in ancient Rome are examined, to verify if the objectification that existed in the archaic law was overcome with the latest changes of the Roman family. The approach method was deductive, through bibliographical techniques.
