O escritor argentino Domingo Faustino Sarmiento foi um dos mais importantes intelectuais latino-americanos do século XIX, além de ter participado ativamente dos principais movimentos polÃticosdo seu paÃs. Sua principal preocupação era explicar e buscar soluções para os crônicos problemas que identificava como responsáveis pelo atraso da Argentina e da América do Sul como um todo. A primeira parte deste artigo constará da análise das causalidades que o autor levantava parajustificar este atraso da sociedade argentina, onde aparece claramente o que eles supunham fossem razões naturais; a segunda parte procurará destacar a forma como se desenvolveu opensamento polÃtico de Sarmiento, tendo em vista a maneira como via e propunha soluções para os “males†do paÃs; finalmente, serão tratados as inovações e limites desta produção intelectual. Para este texto serão usados alguns dos principais livros de Sarmiento.
The argentine writer Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was one of the most important Latin-American
intellectuals of the nineteenth century, besides having actively taken part in the major political
movements of his country. His main concern was to explain and seek solutions to the chronic
problems which he identified as responsible for the backwardness in Argentina and South America
as a whole. The first part of this article will consist in the analysis of the causalities that the
author brought up to justify this backwardness of the argentine society, in which clearly appears
what they assumed as natural reasons; the second part will seek to highlight how Sarmiento’s
political thought has developed, considering the way he saw and proposed solutions to the
“ills†of the country; finally, will be considered the innovations and limits of this intellectual
production. To this text will be used some of Sarmiento’s most important books.
