O artigo pretende mostrar a importância dos postulados de Ferdinand de Saussure para os rumos da linguÃstica moderna. Para isso, parte da revisão das famosas dicotomias saussureanas para mostrar que, a partir da metodologia do mestre genebrino, há o surgimento de duas grandes correntes: formalismo e funcionalismo. Para caracterizar a corrente formalista, discorre-se sobre o Estruturalismo saussureano e o Gerativismo. Para a corrente funcionalista, colocam-se como representativos a Pragmática, a LinguÃstica Textual, a SociolinguÃstica, a Análise do Discurso e a Semiótica greimasiana.
THE SAUSSUREAN DICHOTOMIES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR LANGUAGE STUDIES
This article highlights the importance of Ferdinand Saussure’s teachings to the current directions of modern Linguistics. For this, it starts on the review of the famous Saussurean dichotomies to show that, from the methodology of the Genevan master, there was the emergence of two major trends: Formalism and Functionalism. To characterize the Formalist trend, the Saussurean Structuralism and the Generative Theory are discussed. For the Functionalist one, the representatives are: Pragmatics, Textual linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis and Greimasian Semiotics.
