The soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) crop has a huge importance for the
economic development of the western region of the state of Paraná - Brazil. Phenology is the
branch of ecology that studies the periodic phenomena of living beings and their relationships
with environmental conditions. The photoperiod and temperature are important for the
development of the soybean crop, because it can cause qualitative changes over the cycle.
This study considered the region's meteorological data from the city of Cascavel - PR and
results of tests made with soybeans in the same region. The method of accumulated degreedays
was used to determinate the thermal demand of the culture. It was found that there was
no significant mean difference in the accumulated degree-days for the culture complete it’s
maturation cycle while there was a great variation for the period between emergence and
beginning of flowering, by the Tukey test at 5% probability. With this, it is observed that only
air temperature data cannot determinate the beginning of the flowering of culture under field
conditions, but it can be useful for estimate the thermal demand for the entire crop cycle.
