Considerando a complexa realidade brasileira na passagem da condição de colônia portuguesa para a de país independente, a análise introdutória deste texto procura recuperar informações e reconstituir o contexto em que iniciou a colonização com imigrantes alemães, no começo do século 19, resultando na fundação da colônia de São Leopoldo, na Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul. A experiência histórica registrada por diferentes fontes documentais e interpretações historiográficas sobre São Leopoldo é um interessante indicativo quanto às possibilidades de aprofundar as pesquisas e confrontar resultados sobre o papel da colonização e imigração alemã no sul do Brasil.
Considering the complex Brazilian reality in the transition from the condition of being a Portuguese colony to that of an independent country, the introductory analysis of this text seeks to recover information and reconstitute the context in which colonization with German immigrants began in the early 19th century, resulting in the founding of the colony of São Leopoldo, in the Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul. The historical experience recorded by different documentary sources and historiographical interpretations on São Leopoldo is an interesting indication as to the possibilities of extending the research and comparing results on the role of colonization and German immigration in the south of Brazil.
