Os estudos sobre democracia e cidadania perpassam por um processo histórico que completamente envolve toda a história da humanidade, especificamente a ocidental. Dessa forma, são importantes os momentos iniciais dessa experiência e os debates sobre esse tema, como base histórico-estrutural de entendimento das contradições que permeiam a democracia e cidadania contemporânea e os desafios dos próximos anos. Desta feita, este artigo busca tecer algumas considerações acerca da riqueza da História Antiga, particularmente da experiência e contribuição da civilização ateniense para a democracia e a cidadania.
