This study aims to identify and problematize strategies for tertiary prevention of femicide. It carried out documental research with a quantitative and qualitative methods of retrospective longitudinal analysis of judicial files prior to the practice of lethal femicides in the context of domestic and family violence, which occurred in the Federal District, Brazil, between 2016 and 2017. It used thematic analysis. The study found that all 34 cases in the period were preceded by violence, but in only 11 cases (23.5%) the victim had previously filed a complaint. The analysis of the files of these previous complaints documented failures and limitations in the functioning of the justice system for prevention, which may have contributed to the escalation of violence to femicide. In cases where Court rejected the request for an intervention order, the victim continued to experience violence, but did not return to the justice system to denounce the violence. Half of the femicides occurred within nine months of registering the initial police incident. There was a lack of articulation between the justice system and the women's protection network. Three women withdrew their request for protective measures under duress. In only three cases was the aggressor held accountable before femicide. It points to the need for prevention policies beyond the punitive approach.
