O diagnóstico de diabetes e a necessidade de realizar o tratamento hemodialítico pode ocasionar mudanças no funcionamento da família e na relação conjugal. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o impacto do tratamento hemodialítico no funcionamento de famílias de adultos diabéticos na percepção do participante focal e do seu cônjuge. Participaram do estudo 11 adultos em tratamento hemodialítico e o seu respectivo cônjuge que responderam a um questionário sociodemográfico e a uma entrevista semiestruturada. A coleta de dados foi realizada na residência das famílias e as entrevistas foram submetidas a análise de conteúdo. Foram observadas mudanças na rotina familiar após o tratamento hemodialítico, como o desenvolvimento do papel de cuidador pelo familiar e a privação das atividades de lazer. A qualidade da relação conjugal parece não sofrer alteração em algumas famílias. Nota-se que a família é a principal rede de apoio dos adultos diabéticos, propiciando amparo afetivo e material ao paciente.

The diagnosis of diabetes and the need for hemodialysis treatment can cause changes in family functioning and in marital relationship. This study aims to investigate the impact of hemodialysis treatment on the functioning of families of diabetic adults through the perception of the focal participant and his / her spouse. Eleven people in hemodialysis treatment and their respective spouses who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview participated in the study. Changes in the family routine after hemodialysis treatment were observed, such as the development of the role of caregiver by the family member and deprivation of leisure activities. The quality of the conjugal relationship seems not to change in some families. It is noted that the family of adult diabetics are their main support network, providing them with emotional and financial support.
