Apresentamos, neste artigo, reflexões inspiradas por uma oficina de modelagem matemática, orientada pela educação matemática crítica, realizada com um grupo de estudantes do Instituto de Ciências Exatas (ICEx) da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). A Oficina #OcupaICEx foi uma das atividades ocorridas durante a ocupação dos estudantes ao prédio do ICEx, como parte dos protestos contra a Proposta de Emenda à Constituição (PEC241 ou 55) no final do ano de 2016. Nosso objetivo é discutir, a partir de reflexões sobre a oficina, a ideia de empoderamento sociopolítico por meio da matemática, em um contexto altamente matemático, como é o caso do ICEx. Para embasar as reflexões, discutimos concepções críticas de matemática, que inclui a ideia de matemática em ação, e matemacia. Entendemos que a oficina foi uma possibilidade para que os alunos percebessem o poder que têm em mãos (uma sólida formação matemática) para discutir assuntos de grande interesse social e político e, ao mesmo tempo, que as concepções de matemática, como uma ciência neutra e absoluta, tão comuns no cotidiano escolar, são relativizadas quando a matemática está em ação na sociedade

In this paper, we present reflections inspired by a mathematical modelling workshop, oriented by critical mathematics education, carried out with a group of students from the Institute of Exact Sciences (ICEx) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The #OccupyICEx modelling workshop happened during the students’ occupy movement in the ICEx building as part of the protest against the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC241 or 55) at the end of 2016. Our objective is to discuss, based on reflections on the workshop, the idea of socio-political empowerment through mathematics, in a highly mathematical context, as is the case with ICEx. To give support for our reflections, we at first discussed critical conceptions of mathematics, which include the idea of mathematics in action, and mathemacy. In conclusion, we observed that the workshop was a possibility for students to realize that a solid mathematical background constitutes in a power they have at hand to discuss issues of great social and political interest and, at the same time, that conceptions of mathematics as a neutral and absolute science, so common in everyday school life, can be totally relativized when mathematics is in action at society.
