The aim of this paper is to explore, within the debates surrounding the drafting of the 1988 Brazilian Constitution, the controversy between constitutional continuity and constitutional change, based on the expectations associated with the constitutional model that should be adopted in the country—whether a concise and abstract constitution or an extensive and detailed one. The article seeks to demonstrate that underlying this issue was a dispute over the nature of a constitution and the role it should play in relation to economic, political, and social realities. To this end, it analyzes the debates on the subject before the convocation of the National Constituent Assembly, during the period in which the Provisional Commission for Constitutional Studies operated, and after the installation of the National Constituent Assembly. The methodological approach adopted is content analysis.
