More than a hundred years ago, Brazilian cities in their process of formation were the scenario of a story of criminalization. Hordes of black people, were they free, slaves or freed, occupied the streets and filled the governing elites with fear. The answer found to control this scenario was their criminalization. The creation of the police, in such context, appears as state policy of containment of black bodies. Observing
the current pattern of police operations, we are driven to question ourselves about what unites and what separates us from this slavery past. This paper intends to discuss possible answers to this question. As hypothesis, we propose current demands for public safety in the cities and the functioning of the police respond to and reproduce a racist historical memory. In order to investigate the topic, we confront data collected from bibliographical research and data obtained from ethnography carried out at the Delegacia de Proteção à Criança e ao Adolescente.
