Quando Santo Agostinho era maniqueu fez a afirmação do prazer e a negação da
procriação, depois, quando se tornou católico, tornou-se defensor da afirmação da procriação
e da negação do prazer. Na realidade, depois de convertido ao catolicismo, o Agostinho que
emerge parece ser outro bem diferente do que fora, e se torna irredutivelmente celibatário e
apologista da virgindade. Poucos amaram tanto as mulheres como Santo Agostinho amou. Daí
ser inevitável a pergunta: Por que Santo Agostinho, que tanto amara as mulheres, delas se
afasta?

When St. Augustine was a manichean made the claim of denial of pleasure and
procreation, then became a catholic when he became champion of the assertion of procreation
and the denial of pleasure. After converting to Catholicism, Augustine that emerges seems to
be another quite different than outside, and becomes irreducibly bachelor and apologist of
virginity. Few loved both women loved St. Augustine. Hence the inevitable question: Why is
St. Augustine, who had so loved women, of them away?
