The theme of medieval preaching has received increasing historiographical attention in recent decades. However, most of the research into the subject are focused on the periods known as Central Middle Ages (11th -13th centuries) and Late Middle Ages (14th-15th centuries). Thus, the first centuries of medieval West are often neglected. In this article we survey the specific discussions related to the study of the sermons of Leo and Caesarius, respectively bishops of Rome (440-461) and Arles (502-542). The historiographical debate proposed here takes as reference the recent general contributions associated to the research field, giving special attention to the sermons that both bishops dedicated to the Christian feasts.
