In recent decades, the Roman Pontiffs have begun to speak of a “new evangelization”. Its novelty consists in the fact that it is addressed to a new type of society: the post-Christian society or that which is in the process of becoming one. Societies which fit into this category are characterized by postmodernity, that is, by the rejection of the meta-narratives of modernity, but not overcoming the fundamental notions on which these metanarratives are based. This article studies the Ratzingerian critique of two of the founding notions of modernity – the modern understanding of reason and freedom – as well as some ways that, in his opinion, could serve to broaden and purify them in the light of Revelation.

En las últimas décadas los Romanos Pontífices han empezado a hablar de una nueva evangelización. Su novedad consiste en que va dirigida a un nuevo tipo de sociedades: las sociedades post-cristianas o en vías de serlo. Estas sociedades se caracterizan por ser postmodernas, es decir: por rechazar las meta-narrativas de la modernidad, pero sin lograr superar las nociones fundamentales en las que dichas meta-narrativas se basan. El artículo estudia la crítica ratzingeriana de dos de las nociones fundantes de la modernidad – la comprensión moderna de razón y de libertad –, y algunas vías que, en su opinión, podrían servir para ampliarlas y purificarlas a la luz de la revelación.
