MÍDIA E DEMOCRACIA: O QUARTO VERSUS O QUINTO PODER

O trabalho se estrutura em três partes interligadas. Na primeira procura fazer
uma sensibilização para a mídia, mostrando como vivemos, hoje, uma sociedade
midiada e uma cultura midiada. Os meios de comunicação constroem a
realidade, constroem a realidade com valores, montam a agenda de discussão e
influem poderosamente na construção de nossa subjetividade. Num segundo
passo é discutida a relação entre mídia e democracia. Explica-se o que se
entende por democracia e mostram-se as lacunas para que se possa afirmar que
possuímos uma mídia verdadeiramente democrática. Finalmente, na terceira
parte, apresentam-se sugestões para se poder democratizar a mídia. Mostra-se
a importância de se construir um quinto poder, através da organização da
sociedade civil, que possa influir na construção de uma mídia democrática.

Resumo Inglês:

The paper is structured into three interrelated parts. The first part brings
awareness about media, showing how we live, today, in a mediated society and
in a mediated culture. Mass media built up the reality, adds values to it, create
the discussion agenda, and influences powerfully in the construction of our
subjectivity. In a second step, the relation between media and democracy is
discussed. It is shown what is understood by democracy and which the
shortcomings are in order to affirm that we have a truly democratic media.
Finally, in the third part, suggestions are presented if one wants to democratize
media. The importance of structuring a fifth power, through the organization of
the civil society that possibly can help in the construction of a democratic media
is presented.
