Since its origin in the document called “Our common future†and its celebration in the “Agenda 21â€, the conception of sustainable development is presented as an “incontestable†receipt to the attainment of a planetary social-ecologic balance. Proceeding of international conclaves – whose purpose was the adjustment of the nature to economical interests thru strategies for the maintenance of the nature resources – this conception is nowadays gathering an increasing number of followers, what makes its purposes to be accepted without any censure for the construction of a better future. However, the sustainable development stays hidden in a powerful speech of “Nature Protectionâ€, becoming a “papal bull to the salvation of the world†and providing the illusion of representing a less aggression to the environment. This article, written at the scope of the Geography Course of FERLAGOS (Faculdade da Região dos Lagos), has the objective of fulfilling a ten years balance – between the publication of the monograph entitled “A Ideologia do Desenvolvimento Sustentável no Ensino da Geografiaâ€, by L. D. de Oliveira (2001) and the present author’s teaching and research experiences – of the adoption of Sustainable Development in the Geography teaching.
